Job description

The Philosophy Program at Idaho State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, beginning in fall 2025, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The area of specialization is open, but applicants should have expertise in medical ethics and be prepared and interested to teach core undergraduate and graduate-level courses in our certificate programs in biomedical ethics.

The successful applicant will demonstrate strength in both teaching and research, with potential for developing a research program leading to publications that make a significant contribution to one or more areas of philosophy. The normal teaching load for tenure-track faculty is three courses per semester.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the program’s Certificates in Biomedical Ethics, such as Medical Ethics (PHIL 2230), Ethical Issues in Healthcare Law and Policy (4456/5556), and Topics in Biomedical Ethics (4454/5554)
  • Teach undergraduate courses in the general education program, such as Introduction to Philosophy (PHIL 1101) and/or Introduction to Ethics (1103)
  • Conduct research leading to published articles in one or more areas of Philosophy
  • Participate in service to the Philosophy Program, including advising, supervising theses, etc.
  • Participate in service to the profession and the college and university

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy by August 2025
  • AOS or AOC in Medical Ethics
  • Teaching experience in Philosophy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong academic training in philosophy
  • Promise of developing a strong research program in one or more areas of philosophy
  • Evidence of teaching excellence, including familiarity with online delivery
  • Ability and willingness to teach courses that meet the needs of our program, especially undergraduate and graduate courses in medical ethics
