Job description

The Defense Analysis Department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, California, is seeking to fill a full-time Senior Lecturer position in Security Studies, specifically with research and teaching experience in defense analysis, to include but not exclusive to: international security, irregular warfare, history of special operations, research design, statistics and probability, operations research and modeling, and ethics and critical thinking. Willingness to teach in an interdisciplinary department across different defense topics is important. The candidate will teach mid-career military officers from special operations and information operations units across all branches and services of the U.S. Armed Forces and allied countries, advise student theses, and conduct research. The anticipated teaching workload is eight courses per year, taught on a quarterly basis. 

The Department of Defense Analysis offers an M.S. in Defense Analysis with three tracks of study: Special Operations and Irregular Warfare, Information Strategy, and Applied Design for Innovation. Home to an average of 120 in-residence graduate students, 40+ members of a cross-disciplinary teaching and research faculty, and three research centers, the Defense Analysis Department provides the critical thinking skills necessary for future national security leaders to deal with the complex operating environments of the 21st century. The Naval Postgraduate School is located on the central coast of California in Monterey, 115 miles south of the heart of San Francisco. NPS provides graduate education to an average at any given time of 1,500 resident military officers of the uniformed services, Department of Defense civilians, and members of the international defense community, as well as other select professionals employed by the federal government.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A PhD in any relevant academic field is required by the start date.
  • U.S. citizenship is required. Must be eligible for a Top Secret/SCI security clearance.

Additional preferred qualifications (Document any relevant experience in these areas as well as your success in the classroom):

  • Experience teaching graduate students or upper-level undergraduates.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with the special operations community, including but not limited to prior military service.
  • A successful candidate will demonstrate excellent judgment, effective leadership, strong team-building skills, and pedagogical expertise.
