Job description

Associate or Professor of Classical Indian Philosophy

Founded in 1936 by Charles A. Moore and Wing-tsit Chan, the Department of Philosophy at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa fosters dialogue between Western and Eastern philosophers. Uniquely positioned among U.S. philosophy departments, it currently supports a BA and MA program, and doctoral work in Buddhist, Chinese, Indian, Islamic, Japanese, and Western philosophy.

The successful candidate for the "Lenney Distinguished Chair" will receive funds to support research in Eastern Philosophy of Consciousness and the Humanities program (EPOCH), along with a .25 GA-ship for research assistance. These funds also enable the invitation of prestigious speakers for public lectures and specialized workshops for graduate students.

 Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach M.A.- and Ph.D.-level courses in field of Classical Indian Philosophy and area courses such as Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, and Logic.
  • Teach introductory and upper-division courses in Classical Indian philosophy and one or more in Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, or Logic based on the needs of the department.
  • Advise, supervise, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Serve on examination and department committees.
  • Publish in areas of specialization.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service, including leadership roles;
  • Serve as a mentor to junior faculty;
  • Serve as the Lenney Distinguished Chair;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications for Associate Professor:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Philosophy or closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing.
  • Holds rank of Associate Professor or equivalent;
  • Excellent language competency in Sanskrit.
  • Competence in one or more of the following areas: Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, or Logic.
  • Demonstrated success in teaching and research.
  • Demonstrated interest in service.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Minimum Qualifications for Professor:

  • In addition to those listed for Associate Professor above;
  • Minimum of four years of service as Associate Professor or equivalent;
  • National and International recognition in the field of expertise.

 Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to support the Department’s mission of fostering dialogue among all philosophical traditions;
  • Evidence of a strong publication record in area(s) other than Classical Indian Philosophy.
  • Demonstrated capacity to instruct and advise graduate students in the relevant research field;
  • Interest in public outreach and engagement.
