Job description |
Old Dominion University’s Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies seeks a full-time tenure-track professor with an AOS in Global Ethics and Technology. “Global ethics” should include training in ethical traditions outside of the “canonical” Western traditions, including, but not limited to African/Africana ethics, East Asian or South Asian ethics, Indigenous/First People’s ethics, or Latin American ethics. The AOC should include one or more of the following: cybersecurity ethics, ethics of technology, bioethics, environmental ethics, contemporary ethical theory, or philosophy of science.
Philosophy and Religious Studies classes play a key role in interdisciplinary studies including the degrees in Data Science, Leadership, Game Studies & Design, and Cybersecurity. We seek an Assistant Professor of Global Ethics and Technology to meet these demands. Concerned with fairness, such as mitigating bias, global ethicists are able to teach and research on how to apply strategies to ensure the ethical fairness of design and application of AI, and to mitigate misinformation and disinformation. Because this is a global issue, we seek an applicant who engages with research that addresses contemporary issues in global ethics and technology, especially AI.
The successful applicant must demonstrate the potential for an active research program. We expect this potential to be realized in publishing articles in well-respected, peer-reviewed journals, in edited monographs, and in singly authored or co-authored books, amongst other media.
The teaching load is 3/3. The successful candidate will teach general education philosophy classes, as well as one class a semester in their AOS (such as cybersecurity ethics, data ethics, philosophy of technology, etc.).
ODU has a strong and active commitment to diversity. The Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies especially encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups and those with a demonstrated track record of promoting and enhancing a diverse and inclusive environment.
