Lecturer of Philosophy (Three-Year Term) Oglethorpe University
OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is seeking a three-year Lecturer of Philosophy to start in Fall 2025. High quality teaching is the expectation at Oglethorpe. The ideal candidate will be able to actively engage a diverse classroom of students using multi-modal pedagogical techniques and methods appropriate for a teaching-oriented liberal arts university. The area of specialization is open but candidates must be capable of teaching across the curriculum, including such courses as Introduction to Philosophy, Logic, History of Philosophy, and Epistemology. Preference will be given to candidates whose area of specialization is either Ethics or Criminal Justice, Philosophy of Law, Crime and Punishment. The Philosophy Program at Oglethorpe University is committed to expanding, innovating, and diversifying its course offerings and learning opportunities for students. Therefore, candidates who demonstrate experience and willingness to design courses that involve experiential learning, internships, and learning opportunities that our Atlanta location has to offer will be particularly valued. A PhD in Philosophy is required at time of appointment. Responsibilities will include full-time teaching (4/4 course load), engaging in regular service to the university, and staying current in their field of expertise. In addition, candidates will be expected to teach in Oglethorpe’s unique Core program, contribute to departmental/university service initiatives, and mentor and advise students from diverse backgrounds. Qualified candidates will demonstrate a commitment to teaching from a liberal arts perspective, stressing excellent writing skills, theoretical understanding, critical analysis, and connecting theory to practice. Furthermore, the Philosophy Program is seeking candidates who are interested in collaborating with other disciplines to design courses that are interdisciplinary and can serve a wide range of students within our community. The university currently enrolls a diverse population of nearly 1,400 students who represent more than 30 states and 30 countries, and 36% are the first in their families to attend college. Oglethorpe is committed to fostering a campus community and intellectual environment that recruits and maintains diverse faculty and staff, promotes a culture of respect for different experiences and perspectives, and understands and addresses the role of inequality in shaping our individual and collective identities. We are seeking candidates who are interested in working closely with other faculty members, both inside and outside of the program, to build a more robust and inclusive interdisciplinary curriculum. All qualified candidates will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status. Candidates from historically excluded groups, those whose work furthers the institution’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, and those who bring varied life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. To assure full consideration, please submit a letter of interest (which should speak to a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion), unofficial academic transcripts, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, and the names and contact information for three references. In the letter of interest, please address all the qualifications stated above and provide evidence of a commitment to teaching and mentoring students from a range of social, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The application portal allows you to submit a cover letter and a CV. Please create one PDF for your cover letter which includes your letter of interest and teaching philosophy statement and create another PDF which includes your CV, unofficial transcripts, and references.
