Faculty and staff come together to contribute, each in their own way, to establishing ULethbridge as Canada’s destination university. In 2022, Lethbridge was recognized as one of Canada’s top small cities.

Rank: Assistant Professor

Tenure Information: Tenure Track

Position Details:
The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin as early as July 1, 2025, subject to budgetary approval. Hiring salary will range from $79,132 to $94,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. (or be ABD with a set defense date) in Philosophy or a closely related field, with a specialization in Ethics.

We seek applicants with a demonstrated ability to produce high-quality research, and potential for securing research funding. The successful candidate will also show clear evidence of success or potential with respect to both teaching and service to their profession, the university, and the department. Evidence of an ability to forge interdisciplinary collaborations and engage with the community will be considered an asset.

The successful applicant will teach courses and supervise graduate students in their areas of specialization. They will have primary responsibility for the Department’s offerings in ethics, at all levels. Among general ethics courses, and offerings in the candidate’s area of special expertise, this also includes a course in bioethics. Applicants should demonstrate how their areas of competence can complement the Department’s existing strengths. The ability to teach from a non-Western perspective would be of value.

Our Department:
The Department of Philosophy has an energetic and ambitious group of faculty members with research and teaching strengths in Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Language, Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Law, Logic, Argumentation Theory, Pragmatism, and Feminist Philosophy. Members have recently established the Critical Thinking and Citizen Engagement Lab, which hosts events that bring together faculty, students, and community members from across the region and the country. We have a vibrant student culture, with a yearly undergraduate conference and an active philosophy club that has frequent philosophy discussions and maintains its own undergraduate philosophy room. Additionally, the Department has a growing M.A. program that we are committed to diversifying and expanding in the coming years. To learn more about our department, see https://www.ulethbridge.ca/artsci/philosophy.

Our University:
The University of Lethbridge (uLethbridge) is a comprehensive and research-intensive university founded on the principles of liberal education where inspired scholars integrate research and creative activity with teaching. Our University’s Blackfoot name is Iniskim, meaning Sacred Buffalo Stone. Founded in 1967 on traditional Blackfoot land, it is a place where student engagement in learning, creative activities, and research takes place every day. With campuses in Lethbridge and Calgary, uLethbridge offers more than 150 undergraduate and 60 graduate programs in the Faculties of Arts & Science, Education, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, the Schools of Liberal Education and Graduate Studies, and the Dhillon School of Business. Together, these programs serve more than 8,000 students.

Our Values:
Accessibility, Belonging and Community for all are key strategic priorities for the University of Lethbridge. The university recognizes that diversity enriches our campus and our community and is fundamental to excellence in teaching, learning, and research. Through recruitment and support of individuals who further enhance our diversity, the University strives to create a diverse and inclusive community where students, faculty and staff feel welcome, are treated equitably, and can thrive.

Our City:
Living and benefiting from Blackfoot Confederacy’s traditional territory, Iniskim (uLethbridge) is direct neighbours with Kainai Nation, the largest reserve in Canada. We acknowledge and deeply appreciate the Siksikaitsitapi peoples’ connection to their traditional territory and honour the traditions of people who have cared for this land since time immemorial. Home to more than 100,000 people, Lethbridge is a place where ideas grow. It is a culturally vibrant city with a flourishing arts scene and an active social calendar. We boast stunning scenery, four distinct seasons, spectacular sunrises and glowing sunsets that illuminate Alberta’s big sky. Lethbridge is only two hours from Calgary’s International Airport and a short drive to both Waterton Lakes National Park and the United States border.
