Assistant Professor - Philosophy Job Type Full-time Description Job ID FU9911 -0012-1834 Position Classification FT Faculty UDMPU (9 month) Position Summary The Department of Philosophy at the University of Detroit Mercy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Philosophy, with specialization in Continental Philosophy, to begin August 2025. The Department of Philosophy is a vibrant home of intellectual engagement at our University. We host an annual Ethics Bowl, and offer a wide range of courses (including in the Health Humanities, and Honors, and Women's and Gender Studies programs). Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Department of Philosophy seeks candidates to teach courses in Continental philosophy and core introductory courses such as Introduction to Philosophy and Foundations of Ethics. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching competencies include at least one of the following additional areas: Environmental Ethics, Health Care Ethics, Philosophy of Technology, and Philosophy of Race. The teaching load is 18 credit hours (6 courses) per academic year for research active faculty. In addition, the candidate will be expected to engage in professional development activities related to teaching and student advising, research and scholarship, and to contribute to the overall goals of the department. Requirements Minimum Qualifications 1. A Ph.D. in Philosophy. Advanced ABDs will be considered but must have their Ph.D. in Philosophy completed by the date of hire. 2. Demonstrated competence in undergraduate teaching. Proof of having taught at least one philosophy course as the sole instructor. Evidence of commitment to (or experience in) teaching a diverse student body. 3. Evidence of active engagement with research and scholarship demonstrated by presentations at conferences, publications, etc. A track record of research achievement in the area of Continental Philosophy is a strength. 4. Evidence of specialization in Continental Philosophy, and evidence of teaching competence in at least one of the four areas: Environmental Ethics, Health Care Ethics, Philosophy of Technology and Philosophy of Race. 5. Evidence of service to one's university or profession. Physical Requirements Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds). Work Environment Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
