Job description |
Position Description The University of Texas at Dallas Philosophy Program invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Instruction, who will contribute to our undergraduate major and minor in philosophy. Our undergraduate curriculum is based in a sequence of courses in the History of Philosophy. We are seeking an excellent teacher who can offer both lower- and upper-division courses that span the historical sequence of required courses in Ancient Philosophy, Early Modern Philosophy, and 19th and 20th Century Philosophy, which may include critical and non-Western approaches. The ideal candidate will also offer Introduction to Philosophy as a permanent component of their course rotation. Teaching competency in Ethics or Applied Ethics (including Medical Ethics) is desirable but not required. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop specialized courses in their area(s) of interest. The teaching load is eight courses per academic year, with a combination of small and large format classes. This full-time position offers excellent benefits, opportunities for promotion to associate and full professor of instruction, and access to support for research and professional development (though responsibilities of this position are primarily related to teaching, with some service). The appointment commences for the fall 2025 semester. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience: A Ph.D. or equivalent in Philosophy or a related discipline is required prior to employment. Candidates with ABD status may be considered during the application and interview process. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Preferred Education and Experience: A Ph.D. in Philosophy is strongly preferred prior to employment. Teaching competency in Ethics or Applied Ethics (including Medical Ethics) is desirable but not required. History and Philosophy Program The Philosophy degrees offered at UT Dallas are housed within the History and Philosophy program in the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology. The History and Philosophy faculty collaborate on several degree programs and broader interdisciplinary research is both welcome and encouraged. Faculty members who work primarily within philosophy specialize in the history of philosophy, which forms the core of our degree programs. They also possess expertise in a wide array of philosophical sub-fields spanning both Continental and Analytic traditions including areas such as Hermeneutics, Phenomenology, Deconstruction, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Psychiatry, Philosophy of Science and Medicine, Ethics and Moral Psychology, Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Philosophy of Gender and Feminism, Chinese Philosophy, and Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Philosophy. |
