About The Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy is a PhD-granting department with strengths in philosophy of science, philosophy of cognitive science, and moral psychology; we are also cultivating strength in applied ethics and social philosophy. We comprise 12 full-time faculty, more than 25 active PhD students, and affiliated faculty across the University.

Job Overview

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship, intended to begin August 15, 2025. Candidates must have an Area of Specialization (AOS) in History of Philosophy or in Comparative Philosophy. The Department is aiming to expand its strength in any of these areas of history and comparative philosophy: any non-Western philosophical traditions, as well as Ancient and Medieval Philosophy in the Western tradition.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will engage in scholarship in their area of specialization and is expected to teach one course per semester for a 1-1 teaching load for the year, with one of those courses expected to be a graduate seminar in their area of specialization. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also be expected to participate in departmental life by attending the department colloquium, visiting speaker series, and fostering a climate of intellectual exchange and collaboration by discussing their research projects with other faculty and graduate students. 

The salary for the position is $54,000. The position is for one year initially but may be extended for a second year.

Essential Functions

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Philosophy, one per semester for a 1-1 teaching load for the year, with one of those courses expected to be a graduate seminar in their area of specialization (History of Philosophy or in Comparative Philosophy).

• Mentor graduate students.

• Mentor and assign grading work to graduate teaching assistants.

• Active participation in departmental life by attending departmental events, including, but not limited to, the departmental colloquium and visiting speaker series.

• Engage in scholarship in their area of specialization by producing scholarly articles or books and presenting at academic conferences.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to effective date of appointment, all of the following are required:

•       A PhD in Philosophy or a closely related discipline.

•       An Area of Specialization (AOS) in any area of the History of Philosophy or any area of Comparative Philosophy.

•       Experience teaching at least one undergraduate or graduate course in Philosophy as the instructor of record.
