Position Description The Department of Philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, to begin August 2025 or up to a year later at the candidate’s request. We seek a candidate with expertise in bioethics, broadly understood to include issues in moral, social, political, and legal philosophy that relate to the practice, policy, science, and/or technology of medicine, biology, and the life sciences more generally. We have a particular interest in candidates with expertise in the issues relating to women, gender-nonconforming individuals, the LGBTQIA community, and other marginalized populations. The candidate must be prepared to teach an introductory undergraduate course in medical ethics and a more advanced undergraduate course in bioethics, as well as graduate courses related to these areas. Teaching load: 2-2. Teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Regular dissertation and undergraduate advising responsibilities as well as regular service duties. Competitive salary and benefits, moving expenses, plus funding for research and travel. The position comes with an option for a semester free of teaching pre-tenure. Qualifications We are looking for an original thinker and a productive scholar with a strong research profile who can supplement the department’s recognized strengths in the values areas in general and in applied ethics in particular and take an active part in the intellectual life of the department. A PhD in Philosophy at the time of appointment is required. ABD candidates will be considered but must offer evidence that they can meet the PhD requirement by the start date. Required components of the application: · Cover letter · CV · Research statement · Writing sample · Teaching portfolio, including a teaching statement that addresses, among other things, the candidate’s ideas for teaching an introductory undergraduate course in medical ethics and a more advanced undergraduate course in bioethics; sample syllabi (syllabi for courses in bioethics and medical ethics are particularly welcome); and if available, complete sets of student course evaluations as well as teaching observation letter(s).
