Job description

The Department of Philosophy and the Center for Mind, Brain, and Consciousness at New York University invite applications for up to three Post-Doctoral Associate or Research Scientist positions, with areas of specialization in philosophy of artificial intelligence and philosophy of mind, to begin September 1, 2025, pending administrative and budgetary approval. These may be one-year or two-year appointments, possibly renewable depending on funding.

These positions are associated with grants to Professor David Chalmers for projects on artificial consciousness and related topics at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the philosophy of mind (possibly including AI mentality, AI interpretability, and AI welfare).  Applicants should highlight their interests and strengths in these areas.  These positions are research-oriented positions with no teaching duties.  

For a candidate to be eligible for a Post-Doctoral Associate position, the Ph.D. must be received between September 1, 2020 and August 31, 2025. For a Research Scientist position, the Ph.D. must have been received between September 1, 2015 and August 31, 2020.  Applications should include a CV, one or more writing samples, a research statement, and at least three references.

Pay transparency: In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for a Post-Doctoral Associate is $62,500. The annual base salary for a Research Scientist is $62,500. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
