Job description

Position Overview:

Lecturers provide quality learning experiences for students. Lecturers perform instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the college. Teaches, advises and mentors students, evaluates student performance, and maintains department and student records in accordance with university policies.  Adheres to the educational philosophy of the university.  Works in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers. Participates in university meetings that relate specifically to faculty.  Serves on department, college, and university committees as requested. 

Lecturer positions are one-year positions, renewable based on annual evaluations and department needs. Evaluations are primarily based on teaching and minimal service. Research is welcome and supported but does not factor into the annual evaluation.

The College of Liberal Arts currently has 113 full-time and 152 part-time faculty in 8 academic departments. The College serves the University's Core Curriculum programs and enrolls more than 2,850 undergraduate students and more than 300 graduate students in 34 undergraduate and 17 graduate majors. The Department of Humanities & Philosophy is a joint department with Humanities and Philosophy concentrations. We offer majors in Humanities, in Philosophy, and in Applied Liberal Arts, and an MA program in Liberal Studies. We offer minors in Classical Studies: Greek, Classical Studies: Latin, Humanities, Philosophy, and Religious Studies, and we contribute to several interdisciplinary minors such as Asian Studies, Film Studies, and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. 

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

Lecturers are expected to be dedicated to excellent undergraduate teaching.  Each lecturer teaches five sections per semester of Core (general education requirement) Philosophy courses: Intro to Philosophy; Contemporary Moral Problems; Social and Political Philosophy; and/or Logic and Critical Thinking. 

May be asked to teach in a variety of delivery formats (online, hybrid, face-to-face). Lecturers participate in committee work and other departmental service at chair's discretion. 

Teaching load is 5/5 per academic year (typically 2-3 preps per semester). Summer teaching is optional, given enrollment demand and chair approval.

Experience Required:

An earned degree master's degree in philosophy or closely related field, awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval). Possesses excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills, and a commitment to high-quality teaching.

Experience Preferred:

Experience in teaching philosophy and documented evidence of teaching effectiveness is highly valued, as is experience working with student populations typical of metropolitan regional universities like UCO.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to work collaboratively with other faculty and staff.  Reports to the Chair of the Department and the Dean of the College.
