The School of American & Global Studies at South Dakota State University invites applications for a full-time Instructor or Lecturer of Philosophy. This is a nine-month, benefits-eligible, temporary position located on our main campus in Brookings, South Dakota. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years based on program needs and performance. We seek a dynamic scholar with teaching competence in applied ethics, introductory logic, and critical thinking. The anticipated start date is August 22, 2025. The position is supervised by the Director of the School of American & Global Studies, and supplemental summer salary may be available. SDState is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university with over $84 million annual research expenditures, more than 200 academic programs and an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. The university is part of a dynamic community for families, students, young professionals, and retirees, which offers an abundance of attractions and activities. The School of American & Global Studies (AGS) is a vibrant, interdisciplinary unit within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The school offers degrees in fields such as History, Global Studies, Political Science, American Indian & Indigenous Studies, and Modern Languages, along with minors in Philosophy, Religion, and Legal Studies. Over 300 students major in AGS programs, and an additional 400 students from across campus pursue AGS minors. The school emphasizes interdisciplinary teaching, research, and outreach. Faculty lead several public-facing centers, including the Ethics Lab and the Public Humanities Institute, reflecting SDSU’s land-grant mission and commitment to community engagement. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will teach four classes per semester in consultation with the director based on student needs and school/program strategic priorities. This faculty member will have primary responsibility for courses in applied ethics and introduction to logic that serve the philosophy minor and majors and minors across the university, including legal studies and pre-law, nursing, ecology, and a newly established public service academy. SALARY RANGE: The salary and rank for this position are contingent upon qualifications, starting at $60,000 at the Instructor level plus benefits.
