Job description

The Department of Philosophy seeks an outstanding postdoctoral fellow whose research centers in a subfield of core analytic (metaphysics/epistemology/philosophy of mind/language) and/or in philosophy of logic/math. The successful applicant will hold their appointment in the Department of Philosophy, with office space provided in the department. The fellow will have the opportunity to teach and present their research to members of the department. They will also be assigned a faculty mentor from their subfield and will be welcome to participate in any activities taking place within the department and the Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.

This postdoctoral fellowship is part of the University of Notre Dame’s Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, which was established in 2025 to support outstanding early-career scholars in science, engineering, and the liberal arts who seek to make a difference in the world. The College of Arts and Letters will appoint and host a cohort of six postdoctoral fellows for the 2026-2028 academic years, including one each from the Department of Anthropology, Department of Music, Department of Philosophy, Department of Political Science, Department of Theology, and the Institute for Latino Studies.

Term and Salary
The term of the fellowship will be two years: from August 15, 2026 to August 14, 2028. Every fellow receives an annual salary of $75,000 and an additional $15,000 to cover expenses related to research endeavors and further training.

Qualifications
The successful application will provide evidence that the candidate possesses a strong and growing research agenda in an area of core analytic and/or logic and that their work would specifically benefit from their residency at Notre Dame and close interaction with particular department faculty. For full consideration, candidates must have received their Ph.D. between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2026. Earlier dates may be accepted if maternity or paternity leave, or Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave occurred within the past two years. Scholars of all nationalities may apply. We welcome candidates with or without permanent full-time research or teaching positions. Doctoral candidates and graduates of the University of Notre Dame, as well as current postdoctoral scholars at the University, are not eligible.

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement
The University of Notre Dame seeks to attract, develop, and retain the highest quality faculty, staff and administration. The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or age in employment. Moreover, Notre Dame prohibits discrimination against veterans or disabled qualified individuals, and complies with 41 CFR 60-741.5(a) and 41 CFR 60-300.5(a). We strongly encourage applications from candidates attracted to a university with a Catholic identity.

Background Check
This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges. Felony convictions do not automatically bar an individual from employment. Each case will be examined separately to determine the appropriateness of employment in the particular position. Failure to be forthcoming or dishonesty with respect to felony disclosures can result in the disqualification of a candidate.
