Job description |
The University of Richmond Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in the 2026-27 academic year. The Department invites applications for a teacher-scholar with expertise in applied ethics. While the area of specialization within applied ethics is open, the department does not have curricular needs in business ethics. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory courses in applied ethics, as well as upper-level courses in their area of expertise. We welcome candidates whose expertise will broaden the scope of our department’s offerings. The position carries a 3-2 teaching load. Applicants must either hold a PhD in Philosophy or show credible evidence that they will complete the dissertation and degree requirements by August 1, 2026. Applicants should apply online at http://jobs.richmond.edu and submit a curriculum vitae (including all graduate courses taken), cover letter, writing sample and separate research and teaching statements. The cover letter should describe the candidate’s commitment to the teacher-scholar model and provide a brief summary of the candidate's research and teaching interests. The research statement should expand on the candidate’s research agenda and expertise. The teaching statement should articulate the candidate’s teaching philosophy, interests, and future professional development goals as well as involvement in and commitment to inclusive pedagogy. The philosophy faculty is a community of active scholars who are also devoted teachers and mentors; we strive to have a supportive and collaborative environment. The Department aims to exemplify and encourage the intellectual virtues of curiosity, creativity, humility, clarity, and rigor while advancing our understanding of ourselves, our world, and our place in it. For more information on the department and its programs, please see https://philosophy.richmond.edu/. Review of applications will commence October 15, 2025, and continue until the position is filled. Please address any questions about the position to the search chair, Miriam Schleifer McCormick ([email protected]) The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university.
