Job description

The Saint Mary's College Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy, beginning in Fall 2026. The department has urgent teaching needs in the areas of ethics, medical ethics, and feminist philosophy. Teaching competence in at least one of these areas is required. Additionally, candidates who can teach the history of modern philosophy will be especially welcome. Above all, the department seeks a dynamic and effective instructor who can introduce philosophy to undergraduates in creative and compelling ways. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to teach upper-division undergraduate courses in their area of specialization. The teaching load is six courses per year, on a semester schedule. Our department is a small, pluralistic department with interdisciplinary connections to a number of other programs, including Gender and Women’s Studies, Justice Studies, Autism Studies, Environmental Studies, Religious Studies and Theology, Data Science, and Neuroscience. Interests that connect to these programs are also welcomed. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program, contribute to the life of the department, and share the responsibilities of collective governance through service to the department and college. Ph.D. and teaching experience required.

Established in 1844, Saint Mary’s College was founded and is sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Saint Mary’s College is a liberal arts college for women, with a strong commitment to the education of undergraduate women, and graduate women and men. As a Catholic institution of higher learning, the College is also committed to creating and maintaining an environment that respects the human dignity and civil rights of all persons. All faith traditions are welcome among our administrators, faculty, staff, and students.

To apply, please submit the following materials:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of application that conveys your relevant experience and your interest in working at a Catholic, justice-oriented, women’s, liberal arts college
  • Evidence of teaching excellence (e.g. sample syllabi, teaching evaluations).
  • Statement of teaching philosophy that addresses your commitment to fostering an inclusive classroom environment, considering students from a broad variety of backgrounds and learning styles

All materials should be submitted through Saint Mary’s College’s hiring portal (Careers.SaintMarys.edu) by Nov. 15, 2025.

If invited to progress to the next round of consideration, you will be asked to provide three confidential letters of recommendation. The first round interviews will be held via video conference.
