Assistant Professor Environmental Philosophy Location: Stony Brook University Open Date: Sep 16, 2025 Deadline: Nov 03, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Description The Department of Philosophy at Stony Brook University invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position in Environmental Philosophy starting Fall 2026. AOS: Environmental PhilosophyAOC: At least one of the following: Ethics; Social and Political Philosophy; Phenomenology;Philosophy of Science; Philosophy of Technology; Indigenous Philosophies; Aesthetics.The Department, which has strengths in Continental Philosophy and the History of Philosophy, is especially interested in philosophical and historical approaches to climate change, climate justice, and the relation between wilderness and the built environment. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to communicate beyond the discipline; and will contribute a crucial philosophical perspective to the Stony Brook Collaborative for the Earth and the New York Climate Exchange, for which Stony Brook serves as the anchor institution.The position involves designing and teaching a range of undergraduate courses in addition to specialized graduate seminars (2/2 teaching load), dissertation and thesis supervision, and standard non-teaching duties. Salary and benefits are competitive. Qualifications Required qualifications: PhD (or foreign equivalent) at the time of appointment. Demonstrated experience teaching philosophy courses at the undergraduate level. Ability to design and teach graduate courses in environmental philosophy. Articulated research agenda. Preferred Qualifications:Conversant in one or more of the following areas: Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, Phenomenology, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Technology, Indigenous Philosophies, or Aesthetics.
