Job description

Assistant Professor, Chinese Philosophy: The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts, Languages, and Letters at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track, full-time assistant professorship, to begin Fall 2026, pending availability of funds. Founded in 1936 by Charles A. Moore and Wing-tsit Chan, the Department of Philosophy at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa fosters dialogue between European/N. American and Eastern philosophers. Uniquely positioned among U.S. philosophy departments, it currently supports a BA and MA program, and doctoral work in Buddhist, Chinese, Indian, Islamic, Japanese, and Western philosophy. Our campus welcomes all students but given our responsibilities to the community in which we operate, as part of our strategic mission, we strive to become a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning, a place that is committed to integrating Native Hawaiian language, culture and/or values into its academic and campus environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach M.A.- and Ph.D.-level courses in the field of Chinese Philosophy and area courses such as Philosophy of Religion (broadly construed).

  • Teach introductory and upper-division courses in Chinese Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion (broadly construed), as well as courses in Philosophy based on the needs of the department.

  • Advise, supervise, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Serve on examination and department committees.

  • Publish in areas of specialization.

  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Philosophy or closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (advanced ABD will be considered; all requirements for degree must be completed by August 2026).

  • High level of proficiency in Classical Chinese and English.

  • Specialization in Chinese Philosophy and competence in Philosophy of Religion (broadly construed).

  • Demonstrated success in teaching and research.

  • Demonstrated experience in service.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and administration.

 Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to support the Department’s mission of fostering dialogue among multiple philosophical traditions.

  • Demonstrated expertise in areas of Chinese Philosophy beyond the Warring States period.

  • Evidence of research  in area(s) other than Chinese Philosophy.

  • Demonstrated capacity to instruct and advise graduate students in the relevant research field.

  • Ability to develop and teach classes in areas underrepresented in the department, e.g. Decolonial Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, etc.

  • Interest in public outreach and engagement.
