Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a Distinguished Professorship in Healthcare Ethics, beginning August 2026. Rank: Associate Professor or Professor, rank to be determined at time of appointment. We seek a person with significant national and/or international stature in bioethics who is prepared to engage in public outreach. AOS: Bioethics, broadly construed, with research and teaching interests in areas such as (but not limited to) medical/healthcare ethics, research ethics, public health ethics, disability ethics, reproductive ethics, environmental ethics, etc. AOC: Open, but candidates should be prepared to teach courses in medical ethics and contribute to the interdisciplinary degree program in Health and Medical Humanities (https://healthhum.charlotte.edu/). 

In addition to the required AOS above, candidates must: (1) have a doctoral degree in philosophy or a related discipline at the time of appointment; (2) provide evidence of significant scholarly activity appropriate for a tenured position in a philosophy department; and (3) provide evidence of successful teaching. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university. A record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or extramural funding appropriate to rank at appointment is required. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in public outreach and higher-profile service commensurate with their expertise and interests. Salary competitive.
 
Our department embodies an inter-traditional approach to philosophy; we engage in work within and between philosophical traditions, aiming to build a philosophical culture in which sub-disciplinary boundaries are less important than the resources traditions provide for addressing concrete practices and problems. The philosophy department offers a major and minor, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Ethics, and an M.A. in Ethics and Applied Philosophy with an optional Concentration in Research and Data Ethics. The department has connections to other units across the university, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and is closely affiliated with UNC Charlotte’s Center for Professional and Applied Ethics (https://ethics.charlotte.edu/).
