Job description
The Department of Humanities at Marshall University, comprising largely independent Classics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies programs, invites applications for a nine-month full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy to begin Fall 2026.

The Department seeks scholars who will directly complement our strengths. The hallmark of Humanities at Marshall is interdisciplinary study. Our majors are required to take courses team-taught by our professors and the topics have ranged widely including animal ethics, literature, Roman law, goddesses & goddess traditions, alchemy, monstrosity & cultural spectacle, Plato and Aristophanes, divination, aesthetics, film, and many others. Humanities is additionally actively involved in the Film Studies, Sermon Studies, HerdHumanities, and the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program.

We believe that a strong university and a healthy society requires a robust and open philosophy program. Special consideration will be given to candidates who are concerned with topics of contemporary relevance and broad appeal to a non-specialist audience, such as Environmental, Business, or Medical Ethics; Philosophy of Science or Technology, or reception of philosophical traditions in contemporary culture. Because of our deep, multi-decade commitment to interdisciplinarity, the area of specialization in philosophy is open.

In this position there is room for experimentation, innovative teaching techniques, a good amount of autonomy, and the prospect of developing new specialties. Scholars who have an active research agenda and demonstrate progress can apply for a 3-3, but 4-4 is the norm. The department seeks candidates who will contribute to the University’s general education curriculum and its emphasis on using high-impact teaching practices. The candidate must demonstrate a strong record in- or promise for- undergraduate teaching in the classroom, preferably with some experience in teaching online. In addition, the successful candidate will show a commitment to teaching, research and service.   Applicants should submit:
1. A cover letter summarizing interests and qualifications 2. Curriculum vitae, a teaching portfolio which includes a statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of effective teaching, and two syllabi of your own design 3. A writing sample between 10-30 pages in length. 4. Three letters of recommendation.
Completed electronic applications received by December 15, 2025 will receive priority consideration.

Additional material may be requested later in the process.
