Job Description

The Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applicants for a nine-month non-tenure track Lecturer in Philosophy position to begin August 2026.

This is a one-year position that is renewable annually, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding. The university provides opportunities for promotion to higher non-tenure track ranks for eligible instructors.

Primary responsibilities for this position will be teaching introductory-level classes in the department. It is preferable if the candidate can also teach an upper division course on Ethics of AI. The load is four courses per semester, with the possible option of additional teaching in the summer. Both face-to-face and online formats will be expected in accordance with the needs of the department. Local residence will be required.

Minimum qualifications

  • PhD in Philosophy (Please note: applicants who are ABD at the time of application will be considered; however, doctoral degree must be conferred by August 1, 2026 to be eligible for employment).
  • A track record of successful teaching in philosophy
  • Ability to teach Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Ethics, Introduction to Logic, and Critical Reasoning

Preferred qualifications

  • A track record of successful teaching in the courses listed above
  • A track record of successful teaching in both face-to-face and online formats
  • The ability to teach an upper division course on the Ethics of AI
