Lecturer School of Historical and Philosophical Studies University of Melbourne The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies (SHAPS) is a part of the Faculty of Arts. The School includes History, Philosophy, History and Philosophy of Science, Classics and Archaeology, The Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation and The Program in Jewish Culture & Society. SHAPS offers a wide range of subjects in these disciplines and has a large Honours and postgraduate student cohort. The School welcomes applications for the role of Lecturer to complement its strengths and support its teaching and research objectives. The successful applicant will be expected to teach, research, supervise and administer at a level commensurate with a Level B Lecturer. The area of specialization is Metaphysics and Philosophy of Science, with the ability to teach across a broad range of subjects in Philosophy, including first-year. The applicant must have a demonstrated capacity to achieve a high level of research performance through the steady production of refereed publications. The successful applicant will also be able to demonstrate significant grant-winning potential. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching to a high standard at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as for developing new subjects as appropriate. Supervision of research students is also an option. The successful candidate will have a proven capability to make a contribution to research and engagement in philosophy and will aspire to cultivate research links and networks with other groups on campus, as well as with external networks/partners nationally and internationally. The candidate will also take on administrative tasks associated with the appointment such as supervision of casual staff associated with their teaching area. Qualifications A PhD or equivalent degree in Philosophy or related discipline is strongly preferred Salary & Appointment Information This is a full-time fixed term position, appointed for first semester 2026 (semester starting late Feb). Salary is $124,656 - $148,023 p.a. plus 17% super. Key Responsibilities The incumbent will possess well-established academic skills and strong academic performance: TEACHING AND LEARNING Subject coordination and delivery at a 40:40:20 Education and teaching, Research, and Service and leadership split. Development of technology-based teaching, learning and assessment programs and resources RESEARCH Publications, including (but not limited to) peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, books, creative outputs and commissioned reports LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE Active engagement in service, leadership and coordination roles in the discipline, School and Faculty demonstrating respectful, inclusive behaviours at all times and building trust amongst colleagues Active participation within the discipline Compliance with University policy and procedural requirements Continuing professional development activities Application Procedures & Deadline Information Candidates are asked to apply through the University of Melbourne job portal.
