The Department of French Studies in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences at Louisiana State University is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Black French Thought, broadly construed. The ideal candidate will have a background in philosophy or literary theory and will demonstrate a sustained interest in the problems raised by contemporary African and Continental philosophy with respect to the history, politics, religion, and esthetics of Francophone African, Afropean, and diasporic communities.

We invite a broad array of scholarly orientations and projects, and we are seeking a scholar who is able to make connections across a broad array of on-campus units, including AAAS, Geography and Anthropology, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Comparative Literature, and English. Designated as one of the Centers of Excellence by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the LSU Department of French Studies and its Center for French and Francophone Studies are, in addition, members of the Reseau International des Chaires Senghor de la Francophonie.

Required Qualifications: The candidate must have a PhD in French Studies, Philosophy or an equivalent degree at the time of employment and well as four-skills fluency in both French and English. The candidate’s research in their area of expertise must be commensurate with LSU’s Carnegie classification (Research University—very high research activity).

Responsibilities: Ability to teach continental philosophy and French and Francophone cultural studies undergraduate courses in French or English, French language acquisition, as well as graduate courses in their field of expertise. Interest in teaching literature and in innovative pedagogy and expertise in digital forms of delivery is also desirable. A successful candidate will have opportunities to supervise and mentor graduate students and serve on graduate committees for students in the DFS and other units, including philosophy
