Senior Research Scholar - Political Values from a Global Perspective

The Institute of Global Value Inquiry (IGVI) invites applications from Global South researchers in philosophy, political theory, and adjacent disciplines to apply for the position of Senior Research Scholar with a focus on political values. This is a remote position. The successful applicant will receive a stipend of 1500 € per month, and lead an IGVI funded research group on political values from a global perspective. This is an opportunity to become a key member of the first generation of IGVI’s core team of researchers. The employment of the senior research scholar will be for an initial period of four years.

Responsibilities of a Senior Research Scholar:

  • designing and conducting research on a project related to „political values from a global perspective“
  • establishing and leading an IGVI-funded international research group of up to five scholars
  • organising conferences
  • contributing to the forthcoming Journal of Global Value Inquiry as member of the editorial team (together with fellow senior research scholars and the institute’s co-directors)

Applicants for this position must submit a research proposal that has the potential to serve as a basis for an international research group. We recommend focusing on any (or combinations of) the following topics:

Global, intercultural, decolonial or indigenous approaches to/perspectives on:

  • specific political values
  • the genealogy, shifts and contestation of political values and value systems
  • the concept of the political
  • the interplay between individual and community, forms of belonging, inclusion and exclusion (local and/or global)
  • forms of political participation and collective decision-making (local and/or global)
  • human rights
  • value system shifts in the context of authoritarianism and populism
  • the political consequences of regulatory capture, corruption and multinational tax evasion
  • political values in the age of social media and artificial intelligence

 Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must either be citizens of a country classified by the World Bank as low- or low-middle-income, or of a Latin American country falling outside that classification. World Bank income classifications can be found here: https://ddh-openapi.worldbank.org/resources/DR0095333/download
  • Applicants must presently, or by the time of appointment, be living and working in a country classified by the World Bank as low- or low-middle-income, or a Latin American country falling outside that classification.
  • Applicants should preferably be affiliated with an institution of higher education (university or other).
  • Applicants must have a PhD or doctorate in philosophy, political science, or a related discipline within the humanities or social sciences.

  • research proposal (max.1000 words) presenting the main research questions of the project and the methodological approach
  • proposal outlining a theme for an international research group within the broader topic area of political values from a global perspective
  • brief summary of the candidate’s expertise in the area of political values
  • list of publications
  • three to five published articles (preferably peer-reviewed), book chapters, and/or monographs, containing results of research into values and norms (no more than two book-length works in total)
