Job description

Deep Springs College seeks applications for visiting faculty appointments in the 2026-2027 academic year.

About Deep Springs

Founded in 1917, Deep Springs College is a private, nonsectarian, fully accredited 2-year college program foracademically gifted young people, located on a small cattle-and-alfalfa ranch in a beautiful, remote area of the White Mountains on the California-Nevada border. The program enrolls 26-30 students who divide their timebetween rigorous academics, labor, and self-governance (“the three pillars”) with the aim of cultivating a life ofleadership and service. All students receive a full scholarship during their two years of study. Afterwards, most students transfer to top-tier institutions in order to complete their undergraduate degree.

The faculty of the college is composed of three long-term professors, and two to three visiting professors per term. The student faculty ratio is 4:1, and most classes have fewer than 10 students. Professors at Deep Springs have a unique impact on the intellectual culture of the school; a specific interest in how pedagogy may inform a life of service would be invaluable in this role. Deep Springs is a small and isolated community. As such, professors are expected to engage with the community beyond the classroom by fostering rapport with students and colleagues; opportunities include sharing in meals, projects, recreation, research, and ongoing conversation. Professors are also welcome (but not required) to serve on one of the five standing committees that perform responsibilities such as admitting students.  Information

Each year Deep Springs seeks scholars and artists who are qualified teachers, from advanced graduate students to senior faculty, for visiting professor positions. We typically have two or three visiting instructors teaching each term at the college. These appointments teach one class in their specialty or discipline, with the additional possibility of Independent Studies if they so choose. Scholars from across the Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, and the Arts are welcome to apply. Positions are available in the Fall Semester 2026 (September – December), Spring Semester 2027 (January – April), or Interim Summer Term 2027 (May – June).

Applications for yearlong appointments are also solicited, and applicants may apply for both semester and interim summer positions.

Visiting professor positions at Deep Springs pay $10,000 per semester or $5,000 for the summer term, plus free housing and meals. In addition, the college will reimburse moving expenses up to $1,000.

Materials

We ask applicants to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and statement of teaching philosophy including short descriptions of three self-designed courses you would be interested in teaching at Deep Springs. If selected for a phone interview, we may also request contact information for 3 references and arrange for 3 letters of recommendation to be sent to the Curriculum Committee. Applications can be submitted here: https://www.deepsprings.edu/employment/faculty-job-openings>.The direct link to the application can be found here. Applications for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 Semester appointments will close on January 11th, 2026. Applications for Summer Term 2027 will close on March 1, 2026
