Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Cognitive Science

Institution: Institut Jean Nicod (CNRS / EHESS / ENS), École normale supérieure, Paris

Position Type: Postdoctoral Fellowship

Duration: 2 years

Start Date: 1 September 2026

Area of Specialization (AOS): Philosophy of Cognitive Science; Cognitive science; Cognitive control

Area of Competence (AOC): Philosophy of Mind; Action Theory; Cognitive Neuroscience

Institut Jean Nicod invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in philosophy of cognitive science, as part of an interdisciplinary research project on cognitive control and action.

The successful candidate will conduct research on the foundations of cognitive control research. The postdoctoral fellow will be part of the action team at Institut Jean Nicod and work under the supervision of Denis Buehler. The position has a strong interdisciplinary orientation, aiming to integrate philosophical and empirical approaches.

Applicants should specialize in philosophy of cognitive science, with particular expertise in the conceptual, theoretical, or methodological foundations of research on cognitive control or executive functions. Competence in philosophy of mind and action theory is an asset.
Importantly, the ideal candidate will also have formal training in cognitive science (in addition to philosophy), and ideally a degree in cognitive science; they will be able to design and run independent empirical research, and have experience in data analysis, conducting behavioral experiments, as well as experiments in cognitive neuroscience.

A key aspect of the position is to function as an interdisciplinary bridge between philosophers and cognitive scientists. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to foster and carry out collaborative research on cognitive control with the cognitive neuroscience group led by Étienne Koechlin at the Département d’Études Cognitives (DEC), ENS.

The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to teach one course per year in philosophy of cognitive science and assist in the supervision of Master’s and PhD students. Experience teaching advanced courses (e.g. research seminars) or mentoring graduate students is desirable.

Applicants should demonstrate commitment to research and teaching excellence, as evidenced by publications, fellowships, awards, and teaching experience. Proficiency in independently pursuing third-party funding is expected. The position includes organizing conferences and workshops and disseminating research through edited volumes or special journal issues; relevant editing or organizing experience is highly desirable.

Applicants must have completed a PhD in philosophy or cognitive science by the start date of the appointment.

Application materials must be submitted to [email protected]

Application Materials:

- Curriculum vitae

- Two writing samples (ideally one philosophical, the other empirical)

- A one-page research proposal outlining projects to be pursued during the postdoctoral fellowship
- Evidence of proficiency in empirical research (e.g. publications involving empirical work, description of experimental experience in the CV, or documentation of prior empirical projects)
- 2-3 letters of recommendation

Application Deadline: 1 May 2026
