Job description

The Department of Philosophy and Religion at Appalachian State University invites applications for a renewable 3-year faculty position in Philosophy at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor beginning August 2026.

The requirements for the position are a Ph.D. in Philosophy with a demonstrated ability to teach Logic, and teaching competence in at least two of the following areas: Critical Thinking; Philosophy of Science and/or Technology; Metaphysics; History of Analytic Philosophy; Philosophy of Democracy. Special interest will be given to candidates who also have demonstrated teaching competence in Religious Studies, which may include non-Western religious traditions and comparative studies of religion.

Instructional duties will include teaching in the above areas and other philosophy courses as needed. The successful hire will also be expected to participate in service activities.

All faculty and staff are expected to support Appalachian State University’s Strategic Priorities.

Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the position requires a Ph.D. in Philosophy to be awarded by July 1, 2026.
