Job description

The Einstein Papers Project at Caltech is seeking one or more Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associates in the history or philosophy of 20th century physics.

In partnership with Princeton University Press, the project’s international team of editors publishes the authoritative scholarly edition of The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein.

We invite applications from researchers with interest in the history of general relativity, cosmology, or unified field theory. We also invite applications from researchers interested in digital humanities and the applications of computational methods to historical scientific research.

This postdoctoral appointment is expected to start during summer 2026 and run for an initial period of two years. As an integral part of their postdoctoral training, postdoctoral scholars will work on the preparation of textual and explanatory annotation, verification of manuscript transcriptions, and historical research of the private and professional papers and correspondence of Albert Einstein. The ability to work both independently and as a member of a collaborative team is essential.

Hiring salary range: $75,000 - $80,000

Qualifications

  • A PhD in history or philosophy of modern physics or in related areas at the time of appointment.
  • A strong background in physics.
  • Ability to work productively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and willingness to acquire new skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Einstein’s life and work.
  • Reading knowledge of German.
  • Experience with programming and data analysis, including machine learning and AI methods.
  • Experience with archival materials and editorial work.
