Job description

The Central Division of the American Philosophical Association seeks an Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer. The person selected will begin with training (with compensation) on May 1, 2026, and will then serve a three-year term beginning July 1, 2026. The appointment is renewable. Membership in the APA is required. Attendance at the yearly meetings of the Central Division of the APA required. The Central Division covers travel, lodging, and per diem meals for the annual meeting.

Candidate should be organized, responsive, flexible, and independent, comfortable with using software and online platforms, and comfortable with responding effectively to service requests via email.

Duties
  • Assisting the Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Division of the APA by managing, editing, and updating the online database of users in the meeting program system, managing and entering data into the online meeting program system, and managing the email systems for the Central Division.
  • Assisting the Program Committee and the Secretary-Treasurer with assembling the program. Responding to emails as the support person for the Central Division.
  • Entering session information into the online meeting program system, copy-editing the meeting program, attending the yearly meetings of the Central Division of the APA, taking and preparing minutes for the yearly executive committee and general business meetings of the Central Division of the APA.
Location

This is a remote position and there are no requirements for location other than the ability and willingness of the candidate to attend the yearly meetings of the Central Division of the APA. The Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Division of the APA is expected to attend every Central Division meeting (usually in late February or early March) during their term. 

Start Date

In training (with compensation) beginning May 1, 2026, and in-position for the three-year term beginning July 1, 2026.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. If the person hired for the position is a graduate student, the APA will endeavor to match the hourly wage normally paid to graduate student assistants at the institution where the student is enrolled. For others, the APA will offer an hourly rate appropriate to the position and consistent with prevailing wages in the area where the individual resides.
