Job description

The Department of Social Sciences at Queensborough Community College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Philosophy. The candidate will perform teaching, research, and guidance in area(s) of expertise as noted below and will share responsibility for committee and department assignments, performing administrative, supervisory, and other functions as may be assigned.

As a community college in the CUNY system, our diverse student population primarily takes general education and lower division courses for university transfer. The teaching workload will not exceed 24 hours for the academic year (no more than 8, 3 credit classes per year); summer optional. Teach introductory and elective courses in Philosophy with an emphasis on Medical Ethics. Participate in Departmental and College activities including committees, course and program assessment, curriculum development and preparation of grants. Provide academic support and advisement for students. Continued scholarly activities are required for tenure and promotion. Some evening or weekend teaching may be required. Position to start in Fall 2026.

The Department of Social Sciences encompasses eight disciplines (Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Education, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology) and 31 full-time faculty. We offer several degree programs: an Associate of Science degree in Psychology (A.S), an Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice (a Dual/Joint A.S./B.A. Degree Program in conjunction with John Jay College of Criminal Justice), and an Associate in Arts (A.A.) Degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education (a Dual/Joint A.A./B.A. Degree Program in conjunction with Queens College). In addition, we offer several concentration programs within the Associate of Liberal Arts and Sciences Degree Program.

QUALIFICATIONS

A doctorate in Philosophy from a regionally accredited institution is required.

Preferred Qualifications include:

1) College level teaching experience in Philosophy with strong preference for community college teaching experience with student populations diverse in terms of race/ethnicity, language, gender, college preparedness and other categories reflective of our student body.

2) record of scholarship and/or experience teaching medical ethics is especially desirable.

3) record of scholarship and research interests in Philosophy.

4) record of scholarship and interested in teaching/learning innovation.

5) experience with innovative student-centered learning and high-impact pedagogy (for more information on high-impact pedagogy see the following website: High-Impact Practices).

6) experience with course and/or program assessment.

7) experience teaching diverse college student populations.

COMPENSATION

Salary range $86,741 -$94,909.

Commensurate with exoerience and qualifications.
