Job description
Introduction

The Philosophy and Ethics (P&E) group seeks to appoint, as of September 1st, 2026, a Lecturer, that is, an academic staff member with a strong focus on teaching (full-time - 1.0 FTE). As part of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the P&E group focuses on education and research that connects philosophy and ethics to technology and innovation. The group teaches courses at the undergraduate, master’s, and PhD levels.

Job Description

We are looking for a new colleague with a strong affinity for- and demonstrable experience with academic teaching, who can join the P&E group in providing its educational activities and expanding its teaching portfolio. The P&E group is responsible for many undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the TU/e. You will contribute to developing, coordinating, and teaching courses, in close collaboration with teams of senior lecturers and teaching assistants.

The main responsibility of this position is a teaching and organizational role within the two “ITEC” courses, which are mandatory for students of all majors at TU/e, as part of the so-called Bachelor College. The two courses are: Engineering for Society (Quartiles 1 and 3, third-year Bachelor course) and Engineering Ethics (Quartiles 2 and 4, first-year Bachelor course). Engineering for Society introduces students to a range of assessment methods for responsible technology development, including risk analysis, cost-benefit analysis, life cycle analysis, value-sensitive design, and systems thinking. The course aims to equip future engineers with the tools to develop technologies in a socially responsible way. Engineering Ethics introduces students to some ethical theories, concepts and approaches and teaches students how to use them with reference to a range of technologies and case studies. There will be an opportunity in future years to take over the coordination of one of these courses.

You will be able to work on obtaining your University Teaching Qualification, if you do not have it yet; the University Teaching Qualification must be obtained within two years.

Most of your time (0.8 FTE) will be devoted to teaching-related activities, by contributing to teaching activities in each of the four teaching quarters. In addition, you will be expected to be part of and contribute to the P&E community, for instance by attending the group meetings and activities (at least 0.1 FTE). You may use the remaining time for research-related activities and personal development.

This position has been created to structurally increase the P&E group’s teaching capacity; as a result, the 80% commitment to teaching activities is non-negotiable, and the position cannot become more research-oriented in the future. Also, you are not required to contribute to the P&E research mission; and career advancement will not depend on grant acquisition, publications, or other research-related activities. Career advancements are possible until the rank of University Teacher 1 (comparable to that of Senior lecturer 2 or Associate Professor 2), based on excellence in teaching.

Job Requirements

We offer a stimulating and ambitious educational and research environment and are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • a PhD in Philosophy or Ethics
  • demonstrable experience in and affinity for teaching philosophy or ethics; experience with teaching coordination is a plus; experience in teaching applied ethics, ethics of technology or some of the specific topics of the P&E courses is an advantage (see job description above)
  • willingness and ability to contribute substantially to the teaching and organization of the two mandatory, large-scale bachelor's courses (“ITEC” ), Engineering for Society and Engineering Ethics (see job description above); for these, familiarity with assessment methods such as risk analysis, cost-benefit analysis, life cycle analysis, value-sensitive design, and/or systems thinking is an advantage
  • good communication skills (oral and written) in English; capacity to teach in Dutch is an advantage but not required.
  • good organizational and collaboration skills and a proactive work orientation.

If you are concerned that you don’t meet all the requirements sufficiently, but you feel qualified and the job does excite you, then be sure to respond, we would love to look at your profile.
