Job description

The Centre Gilles Gaston Granger (CGGG) at Aix-Marseille University (AMU) invites applications for a 3+1-year PhD position (full time) within the context of the ERC project RESCALE led by Sebastien Rivat (https://erc-rescale.com/).

The PhD student is expected to have a master degree in philosophy or in physics and to carry out research in the philosophy of physics (broadly construed). Potential research topics include (but are not restricted to): (i) the semantics of non-fundamental physical theories; (ii) the metaphysics of levels in physics, ideally with a focus on the concept of interscale autonomy; (iii) the objectivity of scale-relative representations in physics; (iv) the philosophy of effective theories and/or renormalization group methods. Candidates with research interests in the metaphysics of non-fundamental physics are particularly encouraged to apply.

Benefits: The position is limited to 3 years, with the possibility to extend for one year. Funding to cover costs to attend conferences is also provided (around 3000 € per year).

Applications should include:

  1. A cover letter (including two names and email addresses for potential academic references who would be prepared to send their letter on short notice should the candidate be shortlisted);
  2. A CV;
  3. A PhD research proposal (no longer than five pages, bibliography excluded);
  4. A writing sample.

Candidates should submit their application in English as a single PDF file named simply ‘[your last name].pdf by sending an email to [email protected] by May 20, 2026 with ‘PhD application’ in the subject line.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview.

We offer an inclusive environment and encourage members from underrepresented groups to apply. People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.
