Job Description Position Summary:

We are seeking to hire an Assistant Teaching Professor of Philosophy with interest in teaching introductory courses in general philosophy and a range of topics in applied ethics (including environmental ethics, computer ethics, and, potentially, business ethics). The position offers an 80% teaching (4 courses each term), 10% research, 10% service effort distribution. Preferred candidates will have experience in course development and innovative pedagogical strategies. Some online instruction may be available.

Appointment Details: Initial Contract will be for three years, subject to satisfactory annual review.

Work Unit Description:  

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Department of Philosophy has a strong commitment to undergraduate education and aims to prepare students for a wide variety of professional and life goals, including graduate school in philosophy, but also a variety of other fields, including, but not limited to, professional training in law, social work, the health-care professions, or theology, business, and general intellectual flexibility in a changing world. The department runs a vibrant MA program at the graduate level. Undergraduates can pursue a major, a minor, or one of several certificates in Philosophy.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Preparing lectures, discussions, and course activities.
  • Creating Assignments and exercises.
  • Holding regular scheduled office hours.
  • Grading course materials and student assessment.
  • Participation in required Department service.
  • Maintain research program.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Pre-employment criminal background check (required for new hires).

Supervision:

  • This position may supervise a GTA.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1 year as primary instructor of introductory Philosophy courses. PhD by start of employment.
  • Terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in the relevant discipline by start of employment
  • Evidence of research productivity or strong potential to establish a sustainable scholarly program (e.g., publications, presentations, grant activity).
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years as primary instructor of introductory philosophy courses.
  • Experience with course and program development.
  • Experience with innovative pedagogical strategies.
  • Experience working in an online instructional environment.

Salary Range: $58000-$60000, subject to qualifications and experience.
