JOB SUMMARY

The Philosophy Department at Colorado College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy to begin in August 2027. A successful candidate will exhibit potential for excellence as a teacher-scholar with a specialization in Continental Philosophy and competence in Feminist Philosophies. We especially welcome candidates with expertise in the history of Western philosophy who can also contribute to our joint History-Philosophy major or our Psychoanalysis minor. Though not required, an ability to offer courses meeting our non-Western or critical Western major requirement is welcome.

The Department seeks a colleague well versed in both historical and contemporary Continental Philosophy. We welcome applicants with research and teaching interests in one or more post-Kantian traditions such as Hegelian philosophy, Marxism, phenomenology, existentialism, structuralism, deconstruction, or poststructuralism, as well as in contemporary philosophy inspired by the Continental tradition.

Colorado College’s pluralistic Philosophy Department supports interdisciplinary interests, and our faculty have opportunities to cross-list courses and co-teach with colleagues in other departments and interdisciplinary programs. Programs our faculty have recently contributed to are: Asian Studies; Classics; Comparative Literature; Computer Science; Environmental Studies and Science; Feminist and Gender Studies; History; Latin American Studies; Linguistics; Mathematics; Psychoanalytic Studies; Race, Ethnicity, and Migration Studies; and Southwest Studies.

Colorado College is a nationally recognized, residential liberal arts and sciences college enrolling approximately 2,000 students from across the U.S. and around the world. The College, located on a 99-acre campus in Colorado Springs, is distinguished by its immersive learning and pedagogy made possible by the Block Plan, in which professors teach, and students take, one course at a time. Each “block” is three and a half weeks long, allowing for unique teaching and learning strategies. Professors have a six-block teaching duty in the eight-block year, where one of the six blocks may be assigned to supervising senior and independent projects where the work is spread across the year rather than completed in a conventional block.

In the Philosophy Department, regular faculty are expected to teach six of the eight blocks in an academic year, with one of those six blocks dedicated to mentoring senior essays and theses. First-year tenure-track faculty receive one block course release. Following a successful third-year review, tenure-track faculty are eligible for a half-year sabbatical. Faculty then are eligible for sabbaticals in the seventh year, following a successful tenure review, and every seven years thereafter. Faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda and contribute to the intellectual dynamism of the Department and College. Funding is available for conference travel and other scholarly expenses.

Completion of all requirements for a Ph.D. in Philosophy or in a closely related field is required by the start of employment. Responsibilities for the position include: regularly contributing courses to the Department’s historical and cultural perspectives major requirement in European or American philosophy; teaching the program’s capstone courses periodically; offering elective classes in the candidate’s areas of specialty; mentoring senior essays and theses; advising majors, minors, and undeclared first- and second-year students; conducting philosophical research and publishing; and participating in service to the Department and College.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Philosophy or in a closely related field required by the time of employment.

A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, to fostering philosophical inquiry, and to collaborative teaching and learning.
