Job description

The School of Philosophy at University College Dublin seeks to appoint a full-time, fixed-term Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Philosophy and Cognitive Science. The duration of the appointment will be 36 months, commencing 1st January 2027.

The appointee will initially be expected to design, deliver and assess the following modules:

  • Spring: Level 2 Introduction to Cognitive Science
  • Spring: Level 4 Empirical Methods in the Mind Sciences
  • Summer: supervision and co-ordination of graduate research projects
  • Autumn: Level 4 Foundations in Cognitive Science (co-taught)

The Cognitive Science MSc is an interdisciplinary graduate programme hosted by the School of Philosophy and involving contributions from multiple Schools and subjects from across UCD. The successful candidate will have the ability to deliver engaging lectures and seminars to students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, and to engage with philosophical and scientific debates within a diverse and pluralist School of Philosophy.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contributing actively to the graduate and undergraduate teaching programmes as directed by the Head of School. Inter alia, this will involve module design and delivery (including the above-mentioned modules), examination and assessment, quality assurance and enhancement, and associated administration.
  • Supervising and co-ordinating the supervision of masters students in Cognitive Science and Philosophy.
  • Setting up and helping organise a cognitive science research seminar series, along with additional events throughout the year.
  • Assisting the Programme Directors in developing the Cognitive Science programme and promoting interaction between participating Schools and subjects.
  • Undertaking and publishing high quality research and scholarship in their areas of specialisation.
  • Playing an active role in the School’s research activities, including attendance at invited speaker seminars, attending and presenting at work-in-progress seminars, and other research events.
  • Participating on School committees and boards.
  • Undertaking such other appropriate duties as directed by the Head of School in line with the contract of employment.

95 Lecturer/Asst Professor Below The Bar (7944) Salary Scale: €43,025–€73,444 Per Annum 

Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.
