Job description

Position Description
The Department of Philosophy seeks an outstanding postdoctoral fellow whose research centers in a subfield of core analytic philosophy (metaphysics/epistemology/philosophy of mind/language). We are a leading research department, and with over 40 faculty working across nearly every subfield of philosophy. Our large and vibrant doctoral program also contributes to our rich and engaging intellectual community, which includes numerous reading groups, colloquia series, advanced seminars, and abundant discussion opportunities. In addition to our ethics postdoc program, we also welcome a large number of visiting faculty every year, and we have cultivated a welcoming and collegial culture to ensure that our new research community members are quickly integrated into the intellectual life of the department.

The successful applicant will hold their appointment in the Department of Philosophy, with office space provided in the department. The fellow will have the opportunity to teach and present their research to members of the department. They will also be assigned a faculty mentor from their subfield and will be welcome to participate in any activities taking place within the department and the Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.

This postdoctoral fellowship is part of the University of Notre Dame’s Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, which was established to support outstanding early-career scholars in science, engineering, and the liberal arts who seek to make a difference in the world. The College of Arts and Letters will appoint and host a cohort of eight postdoctoral fellows for the 2027-2029 academic years, including one each from the Department of Art, Art History, and Design; Department of English; Department of German, Slavic, and Eurasian Studies; Department of Philosophy; Department of Romance Languages and Literatures; Department of Theology; Initiative on Race and Resilience; and the Program in History and Philosophy of Science.

Term and Salary
The term of the fellowship will be two years: from August 16, 2027 to August 15, 2029. Every fellow receives an annual salary of $75,000 and an additional $15,000 to cover expenses related to research endeavors and further training.

Qualifications
The successful application will provide evidence that the candidate possesses a strong and growing research agenda in an area of core analytic and that their work would specifically benefit from their residency at Notre Dame and close interaction with particular department faculty. For full consideration, candidates must have received their Ph.D. between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2027. Earlier dates may be accepted if maternity or paternity leave, or Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave occurred within the past two years. Scholars of all nationalities may apply. We welcome candidates with or without permanent full-time research or teaching positions. Doctoral candidates and graduates of the University of Notre Dame, as well as current postdoctoral scholars at the University, are not eligible.
