Job description

Centenary College of Louisiana invites applications for a tenure-track position holding the Ratcliff Chair of Philosophy at the assistant or associate level beginning Fall 2027. We are looking for someone with expertise in Black or Africana Philosophy or Latin American Philosophy. Knowledge of experiential learning and the ability to teach a lower-level symbolic logic course are desirable. Applicants should have a terminal degree in Philosophy, demonstrated strength or a commitment to excellence in teaching, work experience in the profession, and a willingness to mentor undergraduate students in research. ABDs within one year of degree completion will be considered.

Successful candidates will teach undergraduate courses at all levels. Teaching responsibilities include teaching three 4-credit-hour courses per semester, or as negotiated with the provost. Qualified candidates are committed to excellent teaching, student advising and mentoring, professional development and scholarship, and service to the profession and the Centenary community. Centenary values interdisciplinary teaching and encourages faculty to contribute to and connect course offerings and scholarship.

Centenary College of Louisiana is a selective, residential, national liberal arts college. Centenary’s beautiful campus in Shreveport’s Highland neighborhood is home to a community of faculty, staff, and students who encourage each other to think critically, care deeply, and achieve more. Centenary is Louisiana’s only U.S. News & World Report Top National Liberal Arts College and is ranked as one of Princeton Review’s “Best 388 Colleges.” The College is located in the Shreveport-Bossier City metroplex in NW Louisiana, which boasts a rich cultural heritage and easy access to other major cities in the South.

Centenary offers excellent benefits to faculty, including comprehensive insurance options, retirement matching, tuition remission, and exchange programs, free on-campus benefits including membership to the campus fitness center and entry to all athletic and performance events, and annual support for professional development. Start-up funds are available, along with professional development funds (e.g., for conference travel) and competitive internal research support.

Centenary College is committed to providing students with a firm foundation in the liberal arts and to the value of civic debate, the integrity of science, and the inherent usefulness of the liberal arts to help students lead lives of meaning. Centenary recognizes that diversity is essential to its goal of providing an educational environment where students explore the unfamiliar, invent new approaches to understanding, and connect their work and lives to the world at large. We thus encourage applicants who would add to the College's diversity of ideas, beliefs, experiences, and cultural backgrounds. Women, minorities, veterans and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. EOE.

For full consideration, applications should be submitted by November 1, 2026. Applicants should submit a letter of application and a curriculum vitae. Candidate materials should address experience or commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and advancing the College’s commitment to diversity.

Candidates who advance in the search will be asked to provide unofficial transcripts and the names, telephone numbers, and email addresses of three references. Background checks are required before candidates can be brought to campus for interviews.
Official transcripts and a background check are required before a candidate can be hired.
