Within the Faculty of Philosophy, Arts and Letters (FIAL) and the Higher Institute of Philosophy (ISP), Social Sciences and Humanities Sector, this position will include the following teaching, research and community service duties:

• Teaching 

You will teach across the three levels of education (BA, MA, PhD), both to students whose main discipline is philosophy and ethics and to students who are not specializing in philosophy. You will be able to teach general courses in philosophy as well as specific courses both in the history of modern philosophy and in the philosophy of mind (course to be created). You will also be expected to supervise Master’s theses.  

• Research

You will develop your research activities, including leading research programmes in two distinct domains. On the one hand, you will do research connected with your teaching in the history of philosophy, covering in particular the 18th century and German philosophy (in particular Kant and his direct successors). On the other hand, the Research Institute in Philosophy (ISP) is seeking to develop a new research direction in the field of philosophy of mind. You will be responsible for the supervision of PhD theses in these domains and you will commit to seeking research funding.

In case your research in one of the position’s two domains of specialization were less developed at this stage than in the other, concrete elements should be provided to the selection committee that point at the probability of a significant future investment in research in the domain that is the least covered so far. 

Once tenured, you will carry out various service activities and responsibilities within the institution, such as being a member of a programme committee or examination committee or having management responsibilities within the faculty or research institute. 

You will also contribute to serving society, particularly in the economic, social, cultural or development cooperation fields. Finally, you will ensure, through research and teaching activities, the university’s international visibility.

Who we’re looking for

• Education

You have a PhD in Philosophy or an equivalent title.

• Experience

You have a proven track record in university teaching, with evidence where possible by formal evaluations. Your scientific experience is demonstrated by publications of international standing.

You have supplemented this with an extended stay or significant experience abroad, outside the institution that awarded your doctorate. 

• Skills

You are comfortable working as part of a team of academics and integrate research results into your teaching. You are capable of conducting high-level scientific research, from obtaining funding to team management. You are creative, open to pedagogical innovation and multidisciplinary.

You can communicate in French and English. If this is not the case, you undertake to acquire a command of these two languages within two years of taking up your position. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.

• Specifically

An ability to work within interdisciplinary teams will be considered an asset (particularly in connection with psychology, neuroscience, or cognitive science). 

Reading knowledge of German is, at least, expected.
