Job description

The Department of Philosophy and the Center for Mind, Brain, and Consciousness at New York University invite applications for one or two Post-Doctoral Associate or Research Scientist positions, with areas of specialization in philosophy of artificial intelligence and philosophy of mind, to begin Spring 2027 or Fall of 2027, pending administrative and budgetary approval. These may be one-year or two-year appointments, possibly renewable depending on funding.

These positions are associated with grants to Professor David Chalmers for projects on artificial consciousness and related topics at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the philosophy of mind (possibly including AI mentality, AI interpretability, and AI welfare).  Applicants should highlight their interests and strengths in these areas.  These positions are research-oriented positions with no teaching duties.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for a Post-Doctoral Associate is $62,500. The annual base salary for a Research Scientist is $62,500. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

These positions are based in New York and the selected candidates will be expected to work onsite as of their effective start date.

Qualifications

For a candidate to be eligible for a Post-Doctoral Associate position, the Ph.D. must be received within five years prior to the appointment. For a Research Scientist position, the Ph.D. must have been received within 5-10 years of the appointment.
