| Job description |
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, is a vibrant and research-active department with strengths across many areas of philosophy, including ethics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, political philosophy, metaphysics, logic, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and decision theory. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Philosophy, and hosts the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major (PPE), as well as the university’s new BA in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI, in collaboration with AIM). Our faculty and students pursue philosophical questions with rigor, creativity, and attention to their significance for human life, public reason, science, technology, and society. AIM is the Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland. Launched in 2024, it is UMD’s campus-wide hub for interdisciplinary AI research, education, and engagement. AIM brings together faculty and students across all of the university’s colleges and schools, spanning computer science and engineering, the humanities, social sciences, and other fields, with a particular commitment to responsible and ethical AI that serves the public good. The Department of Philosophy and AIM seek a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor specializing in AI Ethics or AI Safety. The successful candidate will maintain an active, innovative research program involving sustained normative and conceptual engagement with artificial intelligence, with interests broad enough to contribute across questions in AI ethics or AI safety and, ideally, with the technical literacy to engage productively with developments in AI. The successful candidate will teach and mentor undergraduates as well as graduate students in our PhD program; contribute substantially to the department’s role in HCAI, including its required technical and social cores; help develop further undergraduate and graduate offerings at the intersection of philosophy and AI; and participate in departmental, university, and professional service. Physical Demands: Normal classroom teaching demands. Minimum Qualification: Education: PHD or equivalent in Philosophy or related field by the time of appointment. Experience: 2 years of research in A.I. Ethics or A.I. Safety as primary areas of focus. Some prior teaching experience at the university level. Preference: Ability to contribute teaching relevant to the new BA program in Human-Centered AI, and in particular in the technical core. Required Application Materials: Assistant-level: CV; Cover letter; Research statement; Teaching statement; Letters of recommendation (3)
Associate-level: CV; Cover letter; Research statement (optional); Names of potential recommenders to be consulted if candidate is long-listed (2) |
