| Job description |
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, tenure-accruing position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 16, 2027, in the Philosophy and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. The successful candidate will pursue an active research agenda in the philosophy of AI broadly construed so as to include work intersecting with ethics, cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and related areas. Tenure-line faculty are typically assigned four courses per academic year at undergraduate and graduate levels and are expected to provide service to the department, university, and the profession. In addition, the successful candidate should contribute significantly to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students. While the AOC is open, the department has teaching needs in philosophy of cognitive science and philosophy of law and teaching expertise in either of these would be an advantage. The department has recently grown with multiple hires in the last several years, and while it remains committed to robust coverage of all of the core areas of philosophy, it has developed particular strengths in the philosophy of artificial intelligence and related areas. The successful candidate will join a department with a critical mass of colleagues working on these questions, within a university that has made artificial intelligence a defining institutional priority. The University of Florida is home to the HiPerGator AI supercomputer and was recently ranked first in the nation in an assessment of institutional AI readiness. The department offers an undergraduate course in ethics of data and technology that reaches over 1000 students each year and the undergraduate program in general is very robust, with a large number of majors and minors. The department also has a good working relationship with other units, including the relatively new Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education, which has on its faculty a number of philosophers and with which there is ongoing collaboration on conferences and other academic events.
