Job description

The Department of Philosophy at John Carroll University invites applications for a full-time (continuing, non-tenure track) Faculty of Practice position in Philosophy of Religion, beginning August, 2027.

Area of specialization: philosophy of religion

Because this position requires teaching philosophy courses for the interdisciplinary Catholic Studies minor, experience engaging with the Catholic intellectual tradition is required. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in the Jesuit Catholic philosophical tradition, in particular.

Ability to teach in one or more of the following areas will also be an advantage: ancient Greek philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics, applied ethics (bioethics, medical, environmental, sport, or AI ethics), comparative philosophy, and non-Western philosophical traditions.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated excellence in teaching, commitment to high-impact pedagogies, and the ability to offer a wide range of courses that can support the University’s Integrative Core Curriculum, the Philosophy major and minor, the Catholic Studies minor, and other interdisciplinary programs to which the Department of Philosophy contributes (these include minors in Artificial Intelligence, Bioethics, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies).

Responsibilities include both teaching and service. The teaching requirement is four sections in each of the fall and spring semesters, in some combination of introductory- and upper-level undergraduate core and major/minor courses. Service may include: advising students; participating on departmental, college, and University committees; curriculum development; assisting recruiting, development, and marketing activities; serving as an advisor to student organizations; participation in University ministry; service rendered to the individual’s profession; and participation in other activities appropriately related to the mission of the University.

Faculty of Practice are full-time, continuing members of the Faculty who are not eligible for tenure. An active research agenda is welcome, but is not required for the position.

The University will provide opportunities to apply for professional development support when such support relates to the responsibilities of the Faculty of Practice member.

The Search Committee will begin reviewing applications after November 18, and will continue until the position is filled.

A complete application consists of:
  • A cover letter addressing the candidate’s professional background and experience, particularly as they relate to teaching in the content areas outlined in the job description, interest in teaching within a liberal-arts setting informed by a Jesuit Catholic mission, and a discussion of initiatives the candidate has undertaken that enhance student learning and student success.
  • CV.
  • Teaching Statement.
  • Letters from three current references. Candidates are encouraged to solicit recommenders who can speak directly to the candidate’s pedagogical expertise and other relevant qualifications.
  • Candidates who advance in the search must supply official transcripts for all post-secondary degrees.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D., or its equivalent, in philosophy in hand by August 2027.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the teaching of philosophy of religion at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience engaging the Catholic Intellectual tradition and ability to contribute philosophy courses to the Institute of Catholic Studies’ minor in Catholic Studies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in the Jesuit Catholic philosophical tradition.
  • Experience teaching a wide range of courses in philosophy.
  • Teaching expertise in one of more of the following: ancient Greek philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics, applied ethics (bioethics, medical, environmental, sport, or AI ethics), comparative philosophy and non-Western philosophical traditions.
  • Experience with high-impact pedagogies such as technology- enhanced learning, service and community-based learning, and undergraduate research.
  • Previous service experience at the university level.
