Hong Kong Baptist University PhD Fellowship

Founded in 1962, the Department of Religion and Philosophy under the Academy of Chinese, History, Religion and Philosophy of Hong Kong Baptist University has been at the forefront of research and scholarship in religious studies, philosophy, and ethics in Hong Kong. Our innovative curriculum offers a comprehensive exploration of both Chinese and Western religions. In addition, we incorporate philosophical and social sciences to religious and philosophical traditions, as well as ethics. Collectively, our faculty demonstrates a threefold expertise in religious studies, philosophy, and ethics. Such expertise is also reflected in the diversity of research interests and the broad range of courses offered.

We invite candidates with excellent research potentials from relevant fields to apply for the full-time PhD study under the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) and UGC PhD Studentship to pursue their PhD studies at our Department. Those with first class undergraduate degrees, demonstrated research excellence, and/or (predicted) distinctions in their MA/MPhil degrees are especially encouraged to apply.

Each Fellowship awardee may receive an “Elite Scholar Award” of HK$40,000 per year up to three years, a monthly stipend of HK$28,700, a conference/research-related travel allowance of HK$14,400 per year (for a maximum period of 3 years) plus Research Support Fund of HK$25,000 and housing for the first two years.

Applicants interested in pursuing PhD studies at our Department should contact the Department before applying the University from now until 1 December 2026 (Deadline of the regular round for HKPFS and UGC) or 15 April 2027 (Deadline of clearing round for self-funded positions). Successful applicants not receiving subsidies from the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme may be awarded research studentship based on their academic merit. The current studentship carries a monthly stipend of HK$19,310 (post-candidacy HK$19,660 for PhD) plus travel allowance. Part-time students are not eligible for studentships.
