Job description

Balliol College, in association with the Philosophy Faculty, proposes, if a suitable candidate applies, to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Philosophy for the academic year 2015-2016. The post is for one academic year. Depending on the College’s needs, there is a possibility of renewal for a second, and final, year.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach eight hours per week for the College on average during term time. He or she will also be required to deliver eight lectures during the year, and to act as an examiner, for the Faculty of Philosophy. The post-holder will receive a stipend of £20,635 for the entire period. In addition, he or she will be entitled to some Senior Common Room rights, and will have access to a shared teaching room in College.

The Lecturer should be able to provide undergraduate teaching, and to mark examination scripts, for the following papers:

  1. For Mods and Prelims (first-year students): General Philosophy and Introduction to Logic
  2. For FHS (second-, third-, and fourth-year students): Knowledge and Reality.

Ability to teach any of the following would also be an advantage: Philosophy of Mind, Moral Philosophy (for Mods and Prelims), Elements of Deductive Logic, History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant, Ethics.

(A list of FHS papers and their descriptions is available here.)

In addition to the stated hours of teaching and the requirement to examine, the Lecturer will be required to perform a range of duties for the College, including participating in undergraduate admissions and conducting admission interviews in December; participating in administration and organisation of philosophy teaching in College; undertaking pastoral care of students; and setting and marking College exams.

Applications should be sent to [email protected] by noon on Friday, 19 June 2015 and should include:

  1. A brief cover letter
  2. A curriculum vitae
  3.  A brief description of papers the applicant is able to teach and previous teaching experience. (This can be incorporated into the cover letter if suitable).
  4.  The names and contact details of two academic referees. (One of these may provide a teaching-focused reference.)

Applicants should ask their two named referees to write directly to [email protected] by the same closing date.

Electronic applications and references are preferred.

Applicants wishing to make informal enquiries regarding this post may contact Professor David Wallace ([email protected]), Professor Ofra Magidor ([email protected]), or the Senior Tutor, Dr Nicola Trott ([email protected]).

Interviews are likely to take place on Thursday 25 June 2015.

Balliol College is an equal opportunities employer. Please note that this post would not entitle the successful applicant to apply to a Tier 2 UK Visa, and thus any applicant should possess the legal right to work in the UK for the period of the lectureship.
