Job description

2 Research Fellowships in Philosophy (Metacognition of Concepts)

Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, Radcliffe Humanities, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford

Grade 7: Salary in the range £31,076 - £36,001 p.a.

The Faculty of Philosophy wishes to appoint two full-time Research Fellowships in Philosophy. The areas of specialization are empirically-informed philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, philosophy of neuroscience and/or philosophy of cognitive science. The Research Fellows will work within the Project Metacognition of Concepts, which is directed by Professor Nicholas Shea and funded by the European Research Council.

The Fellowships will commence on 1 September 2017 (or as soon as possible thereafter). Both fellowships are identical, except that one is fixed-term for four years (vacancy 126206), while the other is fixed term for three years (vacancy 126207).  It is likely that there will be one more senior and one more junior appointment. If you would like to be considered for both posts, please submit a separate application for each.

The Research Fellows will pursue their own research under the umbrella of the Project, and will have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary interactions and collaborative research under the supervision of Professor Shea. These are research positions, in a world-class academic environment, with no teaching and few other duties. As such, the appointees will be expected to produce substantial bodies of high quality peer-reviewed publications, single and/or co-authored. The Fellows will be supported in this aim and in other areas of their professional development.

The Research Fellows will be based at the Faculty of Philosophy in Oxford, which is a partner in the Project. The Project is led by the Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study, University of London (“IP”). The Research Fellows will have the opportunity to be involved with research activity at the IP and at the Project’s other partner institution, City, University of London (Department of Psychology: Professor James Hampton), and will be expected to attend some events in London. They will have the opportunity to work with the Project’s other research fellows in Oxford (in philosophy) and London (in psychology), and with other Project collaborators. The Research Fellows will be able to draw on support from the Project for organizing organise expert meetings, workshops and conferences that advance their own research interests.

The successful candidates will have received a doctoral degree in Philosophy by 1 September 2017 (or will at least have submitted a thesis by the date), and will be expected to provide evidence of exceptional potential for research and publication. They need not have already carried out research on concepts and/or metacognition, but must demonstrate expertise in philosophy, with evidence of the potential to undertake significant research which will contribute to the aims of the Project.

Applications for both posts are to be made via Oxford University's online application system. The deadline for receipt of applications is 12.00(UK time) on 12 December 2016.
