Job description

The University of Virginia and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation seek a scholar and teacher of international prominence in the study of the origins, influences, and legacies of the Age of Jefferson. The scholar will be a member of one or more of the following departments: History, Philosophy, or Politics, all of which are in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. This endowed position will be at the rank of full professor with tenure. The anticipated start date for the appointment is July 25, 2017.

The successful candidate will work in areas such as: the political thought and/or history of Early America; the philosophical influences on Jefferson and his contemporaries; the foundations of liberal political philosophy. Additionally, the Jefferson Scholars Foundation Endowed Professor will:

- forge interdisciplinary and collaborative relationships with faculty across Arts & Sciences.

- provide leadership in A&S teaching and scholarship at a time when we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the founding of the university.

- train graduate students in the graduate programs across these departments.

- become an active member of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation community.

Professors joining the University by way of the Foundation's Chaired Professorships are not only leaders in their respective disciplines, but they also serve the University's mission to provide the best learning experience for undergraduates. They will join a Jefferson Scholars community of engaging undergraduate and graduate students and distinguished professors.

Experience should include:

- a record of advancing the field through the publication of original and impactful research.

- a reputation as a leader in the field.

- recognized excellence in teaching and mentoring.

- a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field.
