Job description

The Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center (SSPC) at Duquesne University is excited to welcome applications from distinguished scholars to be its Visiting Phenomenology Scholar for Spring 2018.

Founded more than 130 years ago by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, Duquesne University places a premium on excellence in scholarship and the pursuit of truth through research on the human condition and experience. Since the middle of last century, phenomenology has played a central role at Duquesne in this research. At Duquesne, phenomenology has been pursued in a signal way through the SSPC, which has for over three decades played a significant role in the development of phenomenological research and teaching in North America, Europe, and Africa. At Duquesne, phenomenology has been a major focus in the fields of philosophy and psychology, and it has also been pursued in fields of nursing, music, education, theology, and communication and rhetorical studies.

Duquesne University is a private university that serves nearly 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students and is located on a beautiful campus on a bluff within blocks of Downtown Pittsburgh, a Forbes-rated Most Livable City. One of the nation's leading Catholic universities, Duquesne University provides a well-rounded education that challenges students academically while nourishing their spiritual and ethical development. We share the Spiritans' commitment to: educational excellence, moral and spiritual values, an ecumenical atmosphere open to diversity, and service to students, the Church, the community, the nation and the world. To learn more about Duquesne University, please visit our website at www.duq.edu.

The stipend for the Scholar ranges up to $15,000, depending on the length of the semester stay. Typically, it is for half of the semester. Relocation and housing expenses (ordinarily an on-campus apartment is provided), as well as a modest discretionary account (e.g. books or conference travel) will also be provided. The scholar will be provided with on-campus office space, an e-mail account, and all Gumberg library privileges. The Scholar may audit courses if desired. Responsibilities include teaching a 3 credit graduate seminar on a topic of scholar's choosing, offering one public lecture, and holding weekly office hours for consultation by students and faculty.

The Scholar will have access to the educational and research opportunities and resources at Duquesne University, as well as the University community, who will be able to learn from the scholar's research and insights.
