Job description

Duties:  Maintaining an active program of scholarship that involves regular publication, as well as teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, advising graduate student projects and continuing service to the department and college as appropriate to academic rank.

Requirements:  For the rank of Assistant Professor (100% FTE, tenure-track appointment), applicants must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or in a closely related field with an expertise in African American philosophy that situates it with respect to African and/or Caribbean traditions. Among applicants for Assistant Professor, preference will be given to individuals with competence in Race Theory, Feminist/Womanist Philosophy, Continental Philosophy, or American Pragmatism.  Preference will also be given to individuals who have already-established records of successful teaching and publication. ABD applicants will be considered if all requirements for the PhD will be completed by August 15, 2017. If all requirements for the PhD are not completed by August 15, 2017, a term, non-tenure track appointment may be offered in accordance with University policy (http://policies.siu.edu/personnel_policies/chapter2/ch2-faps/conting.html).

For the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (with tenure) and the Boydston Chair in Philosophy, applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Philosophy or in a closely related field. Applicants must likewise have a broad expertise in African American philosophy of the African and/or Caribbean traditions and a recognized research profile and expertise in the philosophy of John Dewey to assume the Director duties of the Center for Dewey Studies.  The selected individual will hold a tenured faculty appointment in Philosophy and an Administrative/Professional appointment as Director of the Center for Dewey Studies.  Applicants must have academic and scholarly credentials that support appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure at SIU Carbondale. Preferred qualifications include a demonstrated record of obtaining grants and external funding.  Applicants for Associate Professor or Professor and the Boydston Chair in Philosophy must have strong leadership qualities, administrative expertise, and the ability to foster collaborations between the Dewey Center and units within and beyond the University.

The Philosophy Department at SIU Carbondale is known worldwide for its history of leadership and research in the field of classical American Philosophy. It houses the Center for Dewey Studies, the Library of Living Philosophers, the Phenomenology Research Center, and hosts several journals and book series.
