Job description

Located in the Faculty of Philosophy in Groningen, the Centre for Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) stimulates and facilitates interdisciplinary research at the interface of philosophy, political theory and economics (https://www.rug.nl/filosofie/ppe/).

The Centre invites applications for a one-year full-time research fellowship.

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated research fellow who will pursue research within the field of Philosophy, Politics and Economics and assist in the activities of the Centre.

The Research fellow will:
• pursue research at the intersection of Philosophy, Politics and Economics. This can include, but is not limited to Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Public Policy, Philosophy of the Social Sciences, Welfare Economics, Applied Ethics or related fields
• submit a grant application to the Dutch national funding agency NWO for a Veni fellowship (for eligibility criteria see: http://www.nwo.nl/en/funding/our-funding-instruments/nwo/innovational-research-incentives-scheme/veni/index.html)
• assist with running the PPE Centre. This can include help in organizing a lecture series, assist with external funding opportunities, and coordinate a winter or summer school in PPE (see here for information about our previous winter school: https://www.rug.nl/education/summer-winter-schools/winter_schools_2016-2017/justice_democracy_and_rationality/)
• the successful candidate also has the option to teach an elective seminar in the newly established PPE master (see here: https://www.rug.nl/filosofie/ppe/master)
• the research fellow will spend roughly 60% on her/his own research and 40% on administrative tasks (and teaching, if so desired).

Qualifications

The successful candidate is expected to have:
• a PhD in philosophy or any discipline relevant to PPE. The PhD has to be in hand and formally approved by 1 September 2017; moreover, NWO Veni applicants must have obtained their doctorate within the last three years. The 2018 Veni round is open to researchers who meet this criterion on 1 January 2018 (for possible extensions, see http://www.nwo.nl/en/funding/our-funding-instruments/nwo/innovational-research-incentives-scheme/veni/index.html)
• a clear and promising research plan, fitting with the existing research profile of the PPE Centre
• depending on career stage, international publications
• an excellent command of English, both written and spoken
• strong organizational and communication skills
• knowledge of the Dutch academic system may be considered an asset
• a record of international research collaborations is an advantage.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary depending on experience, between € 3,427 and € 4,691 gross per month for a full-time appointment (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities). The salary will be supplemented by a holiday allowance of 8% per year and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%. The post is full-time and will be for 1 year (a successful Veni application would extend the research fellowship for at least another 3 years).

The starting date is 1 September 2017.
