The Department of Philosophy at San Diego State University is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Philosophy, tenure-track position, to begin August 2018. AOS: Environmental Ethics/Environmental Philosophy; AOC: Social and Political Philosophy. The Department of Philosophy at San Diego State University has strengths in ancient philosophy, Asian philosophies, Continental philosophy, epistemology, ethics, logic, modern philosophy, and philosophy of mind. San Diego State University is the largest university in San Diego and the third largest in California. The highly diverse campus community has a student population of over 36,000 and approximately 5,849 faculty and staff. SDSU is currently designated as a Doctoral / Research-Intensive University by the Carnegie Foundation. QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must have a PhD in philosophy by the time of appointment and demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship. We are particularly interested in candidates working in one or more of the following areas that situate environmental philosophy in a broader research agenda on significant social and political topics: environmental justice; environmental philosophy, crime, and criminology; public affairs, urban planning, and the environment; environmental politics. We seek a candidate who is willing and interested in increasing the department’s role as a forum for the public engagement of social and political issues. The successful candidate will have an interest in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Environmental Ethics and Environmental Philosophy. Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels is preferred, as well as a commitment to participating in the SDSU Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs, housed in the Department of Philosophy. The successful candidate will possess strong research interest and capability as evidenced by an appropriate history of or potential for research and publication in top-tier refereed journals. The Department expects that the person hired will actively pursue and secure external grants to support her or his work. The department encourages interdisciplinary research and teaching.
